I access this through my other desktop, using remote desktop access. I have no keyboard or monitor connected, just several external drives, and a decent UPS. It has an Intel Core i3-4130 CPU, and 24gb of RAM.

One is in my basement, a Lenovo Thinkserver TS140 running Windows 10 Pro, which acts as my Plex/file server. Both are old, but are still great for my needs. I'm not a gamer, nor do I mine crypto, and am fairly ignorant to GPU functionality these days.Īt home, I have two desktops that are in play. I used to be much more well versed with computer hardware (did my own builds for decades), but have not been paying attention for the last decade. I don't understand why Plex leaves it off by default. Just ask your remote users to enable that automatically adjust quality setting. The GTX 750 Ti has a second generation NVENC. I'd say try again with your current Plex server. Fortunately, it always settles on the maximum possible one. Then the Plex server would automatically choose the resolution and bitrate that can "squeeze" into the available bandwidth. I had to call my family and guide them through settings to turn that option on ("adjust quality automatically"). So, Plex tries not to transcode and the bandwidth is not enough. The default setting in client apps is not to "adjust quality automatically". But if you have some kind of Dolby Atmos high bitrate audio track the CPU gets involved very much (if it needs transcoding).Ībout the remote users. That answers one of your questions - you can have a good GPU and not so good CPU and have good transcoding. When I watch the Task Manager the GPU shows high, very high usage but the CPU is used minimally, so a good GPU makes a lot of difference. I use GPU for transcoding, and if the sound is "simple" it is either not transcoded or transcoded with minimal resources. Getting outside of the house access to work is not a massive priority - just thought I would explore what I would need to do to make it possible, and stable. My theoretical understanding is - the CPU is always used for transcoding audio, while it is possible to have the GPU handle video transcoding. I can't imagine anyone outside of the house can use direct play, though I could be wrong?

Since I use a 1080p projector at home, and 5.1 audio, my library files are skewed as such. My assumption is - for anyone accessing the library outside of my home network, transcoding will be involved. Pretty much got used to it being buggy, so forgot about that functionality, more or less. Since upgrading the router (a year or so ago), I have not really tried outside access.

It is entirely possible the problems were entirely due to the router. Years ago, gave access to my sister, but she often encountered reliability issues. What is less clear is how beneficial this would be with my system.įor the most part, I don't have anyone accessing my Plex library outside of my home.

My theoretical understanding is that it is possible to have a GPU do more of the heavy lifting (instead of full weight on CPU). Ultimately - I'm trying to determine if I can enhance my setup with a stronger GPU, while avoiding the expenses of building a new computer. I previously did have issues with 2 simultaneous streams, but I think the issue was my router (which i have since upgraded) not being able to handle it. With direct play, it theoretically shouldn't be a problem. I've never tested 3 internal simultaneous streams. Within the house, my current setup works great. I realize that you don't need a powerful GPU to run Plex. Some mobile devices would need it probably.Īnd the question about the upload speed is to the OP. Some people prefer not to transcode, some need it for some reasons. I am trying to answer specific questions about transcoding. Given that CPU is what it is, would it be worth upgrading GPU?"

More importantly - would there be gains for the Plex Server for transcoding when accessing remotely? "My main question is - given how old both are, to what extent would upgrading the GPUs be worth it?

That's correct but the OP asked about transcoding specifically:
